Cleaning oil and watercolour paintings

Do you have a painting that has hung on the wall for a few years that could do with a little bit of a clean? Well, there is a magic method that professional restorers use that starts with a single slice of white bread.

Please note: if your painting is precious or you are at all worried, take it to a professional. Do not try this method unless you are 100% comfortable. It is also important to make sure that the paint is not cracked or flaked.

What you need:

  • Slice of white bread with the crusts cut off

The number one rule is to be very gentle and have the paining on a flat surface with a clean dry towel for support behind the canvas. Take the white bread and very carefully dab it on the paining. Work in small sections and be methodical working from the top down. Any dust and small particles will come off onto the bread and away from the painting.
