Cleaning lime scale from a shower head or tap

Do you have a shower head that cannot easily be removed? Is it difficult to clean without standing with your hands over your head? If so, there is a neat little trick to getting it clean, and the same trick works just as well to clean limescale covered taps.

  • Plastic bag (big and strong enough to go around the shower head)
  • Vinegar
  • Bicarb soda
  • String or elastic band
  • Lemon essential oil

Fill the bag with enough water to half cover the shower head and fill the other half with vinegar. Sprinkle bicarb soda onto the shower head and then submerge it into the bag. With a strong elastic band or string secure the bag in place.

Leave it for an hour, then remove the bag. You should find a nice clean shower head waiting for you, but if it is still a bit dirty repeat the process and gently rub the leftover limescale with 100% vinegar.

If the shower head is really covered with lime scale or dirt, double check if it can be removed as this will save you a lot of fiddling about with the bag. Soak in a bucket with the same solution as above. Once clean, rub some a little sweet almond oil with added essential oil. This will make it shine like new as well as smelling fresh.
