Every now and then someone will get sick and will sadly not make it to the bathroom before they are forced to purge. The consequence of missing the toilet or a well-placed bucket will be that vomit can end up everywhere. Here are a few tips on how to remove the offending mess and smell without pulling out heavy duty chemicals.
- Cold water
- Bicarb soda
- Eucalyptus and Tee Tree oil
- Distilled white vinegar
- Kitchen roll or toilet paper
- Tea towels
- Bed linen & PJs
Scrap the solids off using a spatula or paper towel into the bucket and take the bed linen off the bed as fast as you can. The less liquid that seeps thought to the mattress and into the quilt will mean less work in the end. Once the solids have been disposed of down the toilet you can put all the linen into a long wash cycle. I like to add a few drops of eucalyptus oil directly to the wash and neat distilled white vinegar instead of a fabric softer. The vinegar will remove any left over odour and will also work to soften the fabric too.
This is a little tricky. Fingers crossed you have a mattress protector on the bed and this had gone in the wash with the rest of the linen. If not then I strongly recommend a nice thick one for every bed in the house. If the liquid has seeped through to the surface of the mattress you will need to use some paper towel or toilet paper to soak up as much of the liquid as you can. Now spray the affected area with 100% distilled vinegar and rub vigorously with a clean damp cloth (only use cold water). If you have a fan turn it towards the bed to speed up drying time. Once absolutely dry, mix a few drops of tea tree or eucalyptus oil into enough bicarb soda to cover the offending area and leave the powder to soak up any left over unwanted smells for about 3 hours or so. To finish, vacuum up the bicarb soda and don't forget to empty the vacuum cleaner. Finish with a few drops of your favourite essential oil sprinkled directly onto the mattress surface. If you have a dry day following this accident, take the mattress outside to sit in the sunshine.
Follow the same process as for the mattress above.
Scrape up all solids and dispose of in the toilet. Using cold water and the Gyre and Gymble multi-surface spray, wipe the floor clean. If the floor still has a horrible smell you can also use distilled white vinegar but spray this and wipe away immediately. Follow with clean fresh water to rinse the area and then dry. Finish with a room spray or a few drops of essential oil on the affected area.
