HOMIE

Explanation

A skateboard belongs to street culture, movement and adolescent defiance. HOMIE removes it from all of that. The deck becomes a narrow devotional object, less a vehicle than an icon. Its form still suggests speed, but the gold surface arrests it. It no longer asks to be ridden. It asks to be looked at.

The title does much of the work. "Homie" carries the language of friendship, belonging and neighbourhood identity, but it also sits close to "home" — the domestic space this practice emerges from. The work stages a collision between the public vocabulary of street affiliation and the private labour of domestic making.
