PRAY

Explanation

A skateboard is a thing for going somewhere. PRAY stops it, lays it flat into a long field of red and black, and fills it with a borrowed scene, until the deck stops reading as equipment and begins to read as a panel — a small painted world, lacquered and lit.

PRAY is openly an homage and it names its debt: a version of a work by Coung, a contemporary Vietnamese master of lacquer. Remade by hand on a skateboard, the way a student copies a master not to deceive but to learn the master’s eye from the inside.
